Fergus Morrison

Since 1994 Fergus Morrison has been Principal E flat Clarinet playing sub-principal clarinet in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. For the 12 years before that he was a member of the English National Opera Orchestra. During this time Fergus has also played with most of the major British orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony and the London Sinfonietta. As a member of the Covent Garden orchestra Fergus has played principal clarinet on many occasions, including Tosca with Placido Domingo conducting, and Macbeth and I Masnadieri at the Edinburgh Festival in 1997 and 1998 for Sir Edward Downes.

Fergus Morrison has played Peter Eaton Elite clarinets since 1991, and writes "The Peter Eaton Elite clarinet is renowned for its capacity to enable players to make a big expressive sound. In my experience this has certainly been the case. Not only does it make it easier to make the sound I have in my head, but the clarity of the sound and evenness of the scale make it an excellent instrument for playing second clarinet, too. I have played with many other Peter Eaton clarinet players over the years, including Hale Hambleton at ENO, Prudence Whittaker of the RPO, and Ian Herbert and John Payne at Covent Garden. Although they all play the same clarinets, they each have a quite different style, but I have found that it has been made easier for me to match them by playing a Peter Eaton clarinet, too. Perhaps a good example of well matched Peter Eaton clarinets is the clarinet duet from Don Carlos, with John Payne, recorded on Phillips with Bernard Haitink conducting."
